Waist not want not: the benefits of a repurposed waistband

And how I use them!

I've been asked whether I upcycle (repurpose) all parts of a pair of jeans, and if so, how? So that's given me the inpiration to write a series of blog posts explaining how yes, every part can be re-purposed and how I do it (and love doing it!).

First, let's talk anatomy. If you dissect out a waistband you'll see there are 4 layers of denim along both the edges. This means that the edges of the waistband are very sturdy, which is necessary as that area receives alot of wear and tear over time.

This strength means that waistbands repurpose well into bag straps, which also need to be sturdy enough to support the bag and its weight and to withstand friction against the shoulder. This hobo bag I made shows this way of using the waistband and is great for larger bags which carry more stuff.

Once the strap is in place, I like to add jeans buttons along one side of it and sew button holes in the other side, so that the length of the strap (waistband) can be adjusted. Button up towards the tips and you have a longer strap i.e. crossbody bag; button up towards the base and you have a shorter strap i.e. shoulder bag.

Another way I use the waist band is as a pocket. Again, because of the 4 layered edges they are really strong and will resist stretching everytime something is put in the pocket. I also like to overlap multiple pieces of waistband to get a cool layered effect. This takes some time pinning and making sure everything lines up nicely, as you can see below.

The end result is that the small but mighty clip-on convertible pocket bag has a ridiculously strong outer pocket which is perfect for holding phone, keys and more.

So rest assured that no waistband is wasted! I personally think that good design has minimum waste. If you'd like to check out the hobo bags and convertible clip on bags I have in stock, just head to my website! And if you don't see something 'you' there, then just send me an email or post a comment below and enquire about a customised version.

Cheers and happy upcycling!
